Rare WWII Revolver Once Owned by Joe Foss Resurfaces

A rare revolver, once carried by Marine Corps ace and former NRA president Joe Foss during World War II, has resurfaced. The Model 'A-D'-Hi-Standard-Revolver, currently owned by Jerry Watson, was recently discovered after a search for its history yielded no clear results.

Watson acquired the pistol at the 2012 Colorado Gun Collectors Show in Denver. The seller claimed it was carried by Foss in the South Pacific during the war. The revolver, originally a Model 'A', had been upgraded with a heavier Model 'D' barrel, enhancing its balance and handling. Watson possesses letters and receipts detailing the work done on the weapon. The pistol's unique features include custom-made ivory stocks by Michael Prince of Florence, Ore., designed to fit Watson's large, long-fingered hands. The Hi-Standard Model A was manufactured in New Haven, Conn., in late 1940. The revolver bears engravings by Tony Lee Frost of Dayton, Ore., in a loose Art Nouveau style.

The Model 'A-D'-Hi-Standard-Revolver, with its intriguing history and unique modifications, is now in the hands of Jerry Watson. Despite efforts to identify the previous owner, the pistol's full provenance remains unclear. Its connection to Joe Foss and the skilled craftsmanship evident in its customizations make it a fascinating piece of American firearms history.
