Real-time information displays initiated at four transit stops as part of an experimental undertaking by OC Transpo
In an effort to enhance accessibility and transparency for passengers, Ottawa's public transit operator OC Transpo has initiated a year-long pilot project for real-time bus information screens at select locations across the city.
The screens, powered by low-power e-ink displays, are designed to provide passengers with up-to-the-minute information about approaching buses, including route numbers, destinations, and countdowns to arrival. This information is generated from GPS units on OC Transpo buses and processed in real time to predict arrivals and departures.
The pilot project aims to cater to passengers who may not have access to smartphones or data services. By installing these solar-powered screens at four strategic locations - Eagleson Park and Ride, Bank Street at Somerset Street, Civic Hospital on Carling Avenue, and Bayshore Mall on Woodridge Crescent - OC Transpo hopes to improve access to transit information for a wider audience.
OC Transpo invites riders to share their experiences with the new displays through an online survey at engage.ottawa.ca/bus-stop-transit-information-screen-pilot or by scanning a QR code at the stop. The survey allows riders to comment on the screens' readability, accuracy, and overall usefulness.
The data collected from the pilot project will be used by the city to determine whether the program should be expanded citywide. OC Transpo, as the operator carrying out the pilot project, is committed to continuously improving its services and welcomes feedback from its riders.
