Real-time language translation for AirPods may be imminent
Apple's AirPods to Feature Live Speech Translation
Apple's popular AirPods wireless headphones are set to receive a significant upgrade with the addition of a Live Speech Translation feature. This feature, which is already integrated into certain iOS apps like FaceTime, Messages, and Phone, will be available on the upcoming AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4.
The Live Speech Translation feature will be activated by a simple double press on the AirPods stems. This gesture will trigger the Translate app on an iPhone to handle the live translation, making international conversations easier than ever. The iPhone 17 range, expected to launch alongside iOS 26 in September, will support this new feature.
When the feature is active, the AirPods user will hear real-time translations of the other person’s speech directly in their ears. Simultaneously, the iPhone may play the translated speech back for the conversation partner to understand both sides. This feature is limited to AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 and requires iOS 26 with a compatible iPhone that supports the AI-powered translation features.
The actual voice translation computation will occur on the iPhone rather than the AirPods themselves, which function mainly as the audio output and microphone devices. Initial hints show support for languages like English, French, German, Portuguese, and possibly others, mirroring Live Translation on iOS devices.
In addition to Live Speech Translation, AirPods are also expected to receive Camera Remote, studio-quality audio recording, better call quality, the ability to pause media when you fall asleep, and other features in iOS 26. The AirPods Pro 3 have been rumored to launch later this year, but some analysts predict next year is more likely. However, it is the Live Speech Translation feature that has generated the most excitement among users, promising to revolutionize the way we communicate.
