Wind Power Revolution: CDU Proposes Remodeling Wind Energy Standards in Thuringia

Hey there! Let's dive into the world of renewable energy, specifically wind power, and the spicy politics surrounding it in the German state of Thuringia. The vibrant CDU (Christian Democratic Union) state parliamentary faction is stirring things up with ambitious plans to reform wind energy regulations.

Thomas Gottweiss, the CDU’s tenacious energy politician, stepped up to the plate in Erfurt, explaining that reserving a mind-boggling 2.2% of Thuringia's land for wind power is neither sensible nor achievable. He’s advocating for production targets tailored to actual energy demands, independent of technology. It's all about megawatts, not hectares, Thomas said.

His arguments were reinforced by the modernization of a wind farm near Bucha, near Jena. A few mammoth wind turbines churned out more electricity than several smaller ones used to, proving Thomas's point. The CDU faction is adamant about "fewer, yet more potent plants." According to Thomas's calculations, around 620 modern wind turbines would suffice to meet the state's electricity demands, just 0.8% of the state’s area. In 2024, Thuringia boasted a whopping 867 wind turbines.

However, federal law demands that Thuringia designates 2.2% of its land for wind turbines by 2032, sparking controversy within the state. It seems like other federal states aren't likely to rally for a change in federal law, claimed experts.

The CDU state parliamentary faction is focusing on energy security, affordability, and regional demands, rather than blanket area targets. Thomas emphasized the need for a smart mix of renewables, advocating for more effort in solar and geothermal energy. He admonished the one-sided focus on wind as a dead end.

Thuringia has been lagging behind other states in the wind energy expansion race for years, according to data from associations. In the first quarter of this year, electricity generation in the state took a hit, especially wind turbines producing significantly less energy. The share of electricity from renewable sources decreased from 64% to 55%, or around 1,519 gigawatt hours.
