Redefining Mobility Across Japan: A Comprehensive Overhaul

New Committee Drives Japan's Carbon Neutrality Efforts

A new committee, the Keidanren Committee on Mobility, has been established to boost Japan's competitiveness and lead the charge towards carbon neutrality in the mobility sector. Unlike the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), which primarily represents automobile manufacturers, the Keidanren Committee on Mobility adopts a broader, cross-industry perspective.

The committee, launched on September 22, 2022, operates under Keidanren, a comprehensive economic organization with nearly 1,500 representative Japanese company members. Over 200 companies have registered with the committee across various industries, indicating a strong commitment to the cause.

The committee's focus is on the movement of people and goods, and it aims to reduce CO2 emissions by developing integrated climate strategies, action plans, and policy discussions involving multiple industries. This includes energy providers, technology sectors, and government bodies, to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon society in Japan.

The committee's leaders are Masakazu Tokura, Akio Toyoda, and Koji Arima. Akio Toyoda, in particular, has emphasized the importance of carbon neutrality and has demonstrated his beliefs by driving hydrogen-engine vehicles. His call for a better understanding of carbon neutrality has attracted many like-minded partners, leading to increased collaboration on hydrogen engine development.

The committee is one of three new committees established by Keidanren with the aim of stimulating industries for Japan's economic growth. Chairman Tokura has emphasized the importance of industries joining together to boost Japan's competitiveness, with the mobility industry serving as a pacesetter.

The first meeting of the committee brought together more than 300 attendees, demonstrating a strong interest in the committee's goals. The committee is also working to cooperate with industries and companies outside of the five leading automotive associations, further expanding its reach and impact.

In summary, the Keidanren Committee on Mobility is a key player in Japan's efforts towards carbon neutrality. Its cross-industry approach and focus on sustainable mobility solutions set it apart from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) and position it as a driver in Japan’s broader carbon neutrality efforts within and beyond the mobility sector.

  1. The Keidanren Committee on Mobility, with its focus on reducing CO2 emissions, is engaged in discussions and strategic development with energy providers, technology sectors, and government bodies – Industries that play a significant role in finance and technology.
  2. Akio Toyoda, a committee leader, has been a vocal advocate for carbon neutrality and is driving innovation in hydrogen engine development, a collaboration that bridges the mobility and technology industries, contributing to Japan's financial sustainability.
