Revised Review: Assessing the Performance of Asus ROG Phone 9
The Asus ROG Phone 9, set to launch in January, is making waves in the tech world with its impressive performance and standout battery life. Produced by Asus, this high-end device is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a powerful piece of hardware that sets it apart from its competitors.
In benchmark tests, the ROG Phone 9 significantly outperforms both the iPhone 15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in multi-core settings. In 3D Mark tests like Steel Nomad Lite, it outperforms the iPhone 15 Pro by 488 points and 661 points without thermal throttling, thanks to its external cooling unit. In Geekbench 6, it scores more than 200 points more in single-core settings and 1,200 points more in multi-core settings than the iPhone 15 Pro. Even when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, the ROG Phone 9 comes out on top, scoring 800 points worse in single-core and 2,700 points better in multi-core under the overclocked mode.
Playing graphically demanding games like Call of Duty Warzone: Mobile with all settings set to high, the ROG Phone 9 regularly gets just under 60 FPS without hitting any thermal throttling and below 40 degrees Celsius without using the external cooler. The device can easily hit the 60 FPS cap in a game like Diablo Immortal.
The ROG Phone 9's battery life is also impressive, with a 5800mAh battery capacity that can last for hours of gaming and a full workday, even with the cooler unit installed and running continuously. In X Mode, the battery life is significantly reduced, but it can still last for nearly an hour of constant gaming without draining too much battery. Asus offers two years of software and five years of security updates for the ROG Phone 9.
The ROG Phone 9's 6-axis gimbal system is designed to make photos and videos on the go look better, but its effectiveness is yet to be fully tested. The device's camera is good but not exceptional, with some haloing in direct light and nighttime shots looking especially bad compared to competitors like the iPhone 15 Pro. The ROG Phone 9's display supports a maximum refresh rate of 185 Hz in games and has a dynamic refresh rate. However, its display resolution is lower than other $1,000 phones.
Despite its excellent performance and battery life, the ROG Phone 9 has a poor audio quality. With a price of $1,000, it remains to be seen whether its unique features and powerful performance will appeal to consumers. The Asus ROG Phone 9 is shaping up to be a strong contender in the high-end smartphone market, offering a unique blend of power, battery life, and gaming capabilities.
