Updated GWM Tank 500 Introduces Advanced Features and Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain
The Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) has unveiled the updated Tank 500 SUV, boasting several key improvements and innovative technologies. The vehicle, available in two versions - the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z - has already garnered significant attention, securing 7,289 pre-orders within just two hours of the start of pre-sales.
Key Features and Specifications
The Hi4-T model, in particular, showcases a powerful 185 kW (248 hp) 2.0T engine combined with a 120 kW (161 hp) electric motor, resulting in a total power output of 300 kW. While specific details about the battery capacity of the Tank 500 PHEV are not provided, it is part of the plug-in hybrid system. The range of the vehicle is not explicitly mentioned.
Safety and driving assistance features are a highlight of the updated Tank 500. The vehicle is equipped with GWM's third-generation driver assistance system, Coffee Pilot Ultra, which includes one 128-channel LiDAR, three millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 11 high-definition cameras. This advanced system supports high-speed and urban Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) functionalities, ensuring a safer and more convenient driving experience.
Other safety features include a 360-degree camera system for easier parking and navigating tight spaces, adaptive cruise control, and emergency lane-keeping assist.
Additional Features
The interior of the updated Tank 500 offers a host of comfort features, including ventilated, heated, and massage-compatible front and rear seats. Rear passengers can enjoy a 17.3-inch 3K touchscreen display with multiple control modes. The vehicle also offers flexible cargo space, with foldable rear seats providing up to 1,800 liters of storage.
In terms of design, the Tank 500 measures 5078/1934/1905 mm (length/width/height), with a wheelbase of 2850 mm. It features a 29° approach angle, 24° departure angle, and 210 mm minimum ground clearance, making it suitable for off-road adventures.
Variants and Pricing
The Tank 500 is available in various markets, including Australia, where it is priced from $64,490 for the LUX variant. In China, the pre-sale for new plug-in hybrid models started on August 11, 2025. The pre-sale prices for the Tank 500 Hi4-T and Tank 500 Hi4-Z are RMB 360,000 and RMB 388,800, respectively.
The Tank 500 Hi4-T focuses on off-road performance, while the Tank 500 Hi4-Z is more family-oriented. The Hi4-Z is equipped with dual motors and a battery pack with a capacity of 59.05 kWh, offering a WLTC battery range of 201 kilometers. In contrast, the Hi4-T is equipped with a single motor and a battery pack with a capacity of 37.1 kWh, offering a WLTC battery range of 110 kilometers.
It's worth noting that Great Wall Motor's chairman has teased a potential Ferrari-rivaling supercar as part of the company's future plans.
The updated Tank 500 will be equipped with ATour X LiDAR provided by Hesai Group. In July, the Tank brand contributed 19.18 percent of Great Wall Motor's monthly sales. The Tank 500 is the latest addition to the Tank brand's lineup, which saw a 7.16 percent increase in July, with 20,020 vehicles sold. However, in the first seven months of the year, the Tank brand's sales decreased by 8.19 percent year-on-year, selling 123,680 vehicles.
The Tank 500 is equipped with the Nvidia Orin smart driving chip, and its advanced driving system, Coffee Pilot Ultra, enables HD map-free full-scenario NOA, memory parking, and automatic parking.
