Romania plans to form a cybersecurity alliance with Moldova and Ukraine.
Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine have taken a significant step towards bolstering their cyber resilience by forming a trilateral cybersecurity coalition. The announcement was made following a trilateral working meeting that took place on July 30 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine.
The coalition, which is seen as concrete support from Romania in the process of Moldova and Ukraine joining the European Union, aims to enhance interoperability between the cybersecurity systems of the three states. This collaboration is expected to provide continuous training for specialists in the field of cybersecurity and contribute to the development of advanced cyber capabilities and solutions, including AI-based capabilities.
Dan Cîmpean, director of the National Cybersecurity Directorate in Romania, stated that the trilateral operational cooperation through the establishment of a cyber coalition will be an important pillar of cybersecurity and resilience in the region. He further emphasized that the initiative is timely, pragmatic, and aligned with Romania's objective to position itself as an active and relevant actor in the region.
Natalia Tkachuk, Secretary of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center in Ukraine, highlighted the need for such a coalition in the face of the Russian Federation's use of cyberspace as a destabilizing tool against the democratic world. The coalition is expected to leverage Ukraine's experience in cybersecurity and strengthen a common operational framework for preventing, detecting, and coordinating responses to cyber threats.
The format of the cyber coalition is pragmatic, open, and evolutionary, allowing for expansion to other states or public and private entities. Germany, France, Italy, and Spain have already announced their participation in the founding of this regional cybersecurity alliance. The coalition's goal is to create a union that will improve cybersecurity in the region, ultimately increasing its resilience.
The establishment of this cybersecurity coalition is expected to help Romania strengthen its role in the region. The coalition plans to organize joint exercises among the three states, further solidifying their cooperation and commitment to cybersecurity. This trilateral cooperation is a significant stride towards ensuring a secure and stable digital environment for the region.
