Russian Aviation Sector Hit by Fresh Cyberattacks
Russian regional airline KrasAvia experienced a system failure that disrupted some of its online services. Meanwhile, Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg reported a cyberattack that took its website offline. The nature and impact of these incidents remain unclear, but they follow a pattern of increasing cyber threats against Russia's aviation sector.
On Friday, Pulkovo Airport confirmed a cyberattack that knocked its website offline. However, airport operations were unaffected. The responsible group has not been identified, and no connection to previous incidents has been confirmed.
Earlier this year, Aeroflot, Russia's national carrier, suffered widespread flight delays and cancellations after an IT systems intrusion claimed by pro-Ukrainian hacker groups. KrasAvia suggested its recent system failure bore similarities to the Aeroflot outage.
In 2023, Ukraine's military intelligence agency, HUR, claimed to have hacked Russia's civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsiya. Since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia's aviation sector has faced a steady rise in cyberattacks.
Pulkovo Airport specialists are working to restore the website service after the cyberattack. While the responsible group and connections to previous incidents remain unknown, these events highlight the growing threat of cyberattacks against Russia's aviation industry.
