Unexpected Shopping Sessions: Media Markt Overwhelming Saturn Stores in Germany
Saturn's Media Market Gaining Growing Popularity
Get ready for a shock when you step into your local electronics store! In several German cities, Saturn stores have transformed into Media Markt outlets. From Neuss to Cologne, Aachen, and Hilden, customers are finding the familiar Saturn sign replaced with a bold red Media Markt sign.
The transition isn't unique to these cities; it's happening all across Germany. A few years ago, there were around 150 Saturn stores in the country. Now, with 87 left by autumn 2024 (according to Ceconomy), Media Markt has seized the opportunity and expanded its presence even further. By January 2023, it had moved into 14 more Saturn locations, with more mergers on the horizon. This tremendous growth has elevated the number of Media Markt stores to over 300.
So, what's driving this transformation? Customers increasingly view both brands as similar, so Ceconomy is investing in the evolution and modernization of its stores. A spokesperson confirmed, "We have reopened some Saturn stores as Media Markets and will continue to do so."
Saturn Hangs On
Despite the growing dominance of Media Markt, Saturn refuses to fade away. The brand remains a significant component of the company's overall strategy. Yet, specific details about the total number of Saturn stores and future conversions remain unclear.
For customers, the change isn't drastic. The product offerings are largely identical, with many items available at both Media Markt and Saturn. Promotions and advertising are consistent as well. In fact, customers will soon reap the rewards of a unified shopping experience, as the bonus programs are set to merge next week. Points from past purchases will be merged automatically, enabling customers to shop at both chains and redeem points regardless of the brand.
While Europe primarily features Media Markt stores, Saturn persists in countries such as Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Poland. As of the end of March 2023, Ceconomy boasted over 1,000 stores across 11 countries.
The first Saturn store opened in Cologne in 1961, while the first Media Markt graced Munich in 1979. Media Markt acquired Saturn in 1990, and Metro AG eventually owned the majority of both brands. In 2017, the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group was spun off from Metro, marking a new era for these iconic brands.
MediaMarktSaturn is concentrated on improving the customer experience, which includes leveraging strategic partnerships to heighten in-store and online experiences and adopting express delivery services like Uber Direct across Germany[1][2]. The future might see an even more extensive integration of the Saturn brand, ensuring a robust presence in the German market.
