Silicon Motion allegedly planning to launch SM8466 SSD controller with PCIe 6.0 x4 interface – rumors suggest unveiling at FMS 2025, boasting speeds as high as 28GB per second.
Silicon Motion (SMI) is set to introduce the MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller at the FMS 2025 conference next month, marking a significant step forward in high-performance enterprise storage solutions.
The MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller is designed for enterprise SSDs and is expected to be the main application that will take advantage of PCIe Gen6 drives. This controller offers impressive performance, with random read/write throughput of up to 7M IOPS and sequential read speeds of up to 28 GB/s. SSDs built with the MonTitan SM8466 controller can have up to 512 TB capacity.
One of the key features of the MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller is its robust security. It includes Secure Boot, AES-256 encryption, TCG Opal compliance, and firmware attestation, ensuring data protection and integrity. The controller also supports SR-IOV/MPF for virtualization, SMART monitoring, and end-to-end data protection.
SMI plans to use TSMC's 4nm-class fabrication process to build the MonTitan SM8466 controller. While the emergence of actual drives powered by the MonTitan SM8466 controller is not disclosed in the leaked slide, SMI expects partners to start shipping SM8466-based products in late 2026 - early 2027.
The ramp of next-generation AI servers based on Nvidia's Rubin GPUs for AI and HPC will coincide with the start of shipping SM8466-based products. This alignment suggests that AI is a primary focus for the MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller.
Key partners expected to distribute SM8466-based products in late 2026 or early 2027 include Kioxia and likely other enterprise storage manufacturers. Kioxia is actively developing high-performance SSDs and flash modules compatible with PCIe 6.0 technology using controllers like Silicon Motion's SM8466.
Traditional storage applications are not expected to take advantage of PCIe Gen6 drives until 2026 - 2027. However, with the MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller's compliance with NVMe 2.0+ specification and OCP NVMe SSD Spec 2.5, it is well-positioned to support a wide range of applications as they become ready for PCIe Gen6 drives.
The MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller is compliant with the latest standards, making it a versatile and future-proof solution for enterprise storage needs. As we move towards an increasingly data-driven world, the MonTitan SM8466 SSD controller promises to deliver the speed, capacity, and security required for the next generation of AI and high-performance computing applications.
