Slovenia Disables DVB-T Broadcast Multiplex C

In a significant move for Slovenia's broadcasting landscape, the Agency for Communication Networks and Services announced the shutdown of DVB-T multiplex C on February 1, 2024. This multiplex, launched in 2013 and operated by RTV Slovenija, was primarily intended for the distribution of commercial TV channels.

The shutdown was a result of the withdrawal of pay-TV channels and declining demand, leading to a decrease in terrestrial TV viewership in Slovenia. This decline has made the continued operation of the multiplex less effective.

The closure leaves only two free-to-air channels occupying less than 20% of the network's capacity. Viewers of Nova 24 TV and Golica TV through terrestrial TV will need to find alternative ways to access these channels.

Alternative ways to access these channels include cable, satellite, or online streaming services. It's worth noting that the pay-TV operator Innet TV exited the DTT platform in September 2023 due to a lack of market interest.

As of now, Multiplex A is the only national DTT network in Slovenia, distributing TV channels from RTV Slovenija. Interestingly, RTV Slovenija itself operates the remaining free television channel on Multiplex A.

The financial sustainability of the national DTT network in Slovenia is threatened by increasing electricity costs and low capacity utilisation. The shutdown of DVB-T multiplex C is a reflection of the changing trends in the broadcasting industry, with viewers increasingly turning to alternative platforms for their television needs.
