Solar Power Plant with 1 Megawatt Capacity Now in Operation
In a significant stride towards renewable energy, Stadtwerke Wuppertal (WSW), the majority-owned entity with 70.47% stake, has completed its largest rooftop solar installation to date at the BRA Soil Recycling Plant.
The solar plant, spanning over 4,500 square meters, boasts a peak power of one megawatt peak (MWp). This installation is expected to generate approximately 950,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually.
The solar plant, comprising three warehouses with usable areas of 1,700, 2,300, and 2,400 square meters, is designed to power the BRA operation. Future plans include operating electric vehicles and a hybrid double-deck screening machine at the soil recycling plant with solar power from the BRA roofs.
The low-voltage distribution for the installation fills an entire container, underscoring the scale of the project. The installation is home to around 2,200 solar modules, recently installed in the facility.
The BRA Soil Recycling Plant, a 100% subsidiary of the Waste Management Company mbH Wuppertal (AWG), processes soil excavation arising from WSW construction sites. A future battery storage system will be constructed on the grounds of BRA for excess power storage from the PV plant.
WSW has a history of solar installations in Wuppertal, with facilities at GEPA, WuXi Pharmaceuticals, and the Zoo Stadium already in operation. The total peak power of all solar plants built by WSW to date was around 5.5 MWp, which has now increased to 6.5 MWp with the new plant at the soil recycling plant. Furthermore, additional solar plants are already in the pipeline for construction.
The electric charging infrastructure at BRA will consist of six charging points. The solar plant at the BRA soil recycling plant is estimated to avoid 400 tons of CO2 annually. This initiative is part of WSW's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions.
- This significant solar installation at the BRA Soil Recycling Plant, a subsidiary of the Waste Management Company mbH Wuppertal (AWG), is a testament to Stadtwerke Wuppertal's (WSW) investment in environmental-science and renewable energy.
- The solar plant, generating approximately 950,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, showcases the convergence of science, technology, and finance, as WSW aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy solutions.
- The operational solar plant in the BRA Soil Recycling Plant is expected to contribute to the powering of the industrial operation and even facilitate the future use of electric vehicles and hybrid machinery, demonstrating the potential of solar energy in the industry.
