Sony Confirms Massive SOE Data Breach Affecting Over 100 Million Users
Sony has confirmed a significant data breach affecting its online gaming network, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). The incident, which occurred between April 16 and 19, 2012, may have compromised the personal details of over 100 million users. This is in addition to the 25 million users affected by a separate breach on the PlayStation Network (PSN) the following day.
The SOE breach, which targeted the PC gaming network, saw hackers gain access to user names, addresses, email addresses, birthdays, and genders. Older credit and debit card numbers, along with direct debit details of subscribers in Germany, Spain, Austria, and the Netherlands, may also have been stolen. However, Sony maintains that its main credit card databases remained uncompromised.
In response to the breach, Sony took down the entire SOE network. The company has since been working to restore services and strengthen its security measures to prevent future incidents. Users are advised to remain vigilant and monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity.
