Sony Hikes PS5 Price in US for First Time

Sony has announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5 in the US, marking the first watch of the console's price since its launch. The new prices will take effect from August 21.

The standard PS5 will now retail at $549.99, a $50 increase from its original price. The PS5 Digital Edition, which does not include a disc drive, will also see a $50 hike to $499.99. The premium PS5 Pro model, which has not yet been officially announced, is expected to debut at $749.99.

This price increase comes amidst a challenging economic environment, with rising import tariffs likely playing a significant role. This is the first generation of consoles where prices have not decreased over time but have instead increased. While this is the first watch the US market has been impacted, price increases have already occurred in other regions, although the exact locations are not specified.

The price increase also extends to games, with 'Mario Kart World' becoming the first major title to reach $80. Nintendo and Xbox have previously raised their console prices in the US by around $30 and 20% respectively. Sony's decision to increase the PS5's price highlights the impact of economic factors on the gaming industry.
