Square Unveils Major E-commerce Update to Challenge Shopify, Magento
Square, Inc. has unveiled a significant update to its e-commerce offerings, aiming to bridge the gap between online and offline retail and challenge competitors like Shopify and Magento. The revamped products include enhanced tools for selling on Instagram, streamlined shipping processes, and in-store pickup options, all designed to help small and medium-sized businesses better understand and reach their audiences.
The updates are partly a result of Square's 2021 acquisition of Weebly, a website builder. With the revamps, offline businesses can now create a website and connect their catalog to a Square Online Store using the expanded features of Square for Retail, the company's point-of-sale app.
Analysts view these changes as a strategic move by Square to close the gap in e-commerce and compete with rivals. Meanwhile, Shopify has recently restricted partners from soliciting merchants to leave its platform by adjusting its API license, a move expected to benefit smaller retailers. However, there are no available details on how Shopify or Magento plans to respond to Square's new offerings.
Square's revamped products aim to help merchants reach buyers on any channel, making it easier for them to add e-commerce to their sales operations. The company's advantage could be greater if it offers the platform for free and charges only for payments, potentially making merchant adoption and switching less costly. These developments highlight the ongoing evolution and competition in the e-commerce landscape.
