Electric Vehicles: Germany's Ongoing Surge in Sedan and SUV Registrations
Persisting surge in new electricity registrations remains unabated - Sustained surge in electricity registrations persists
The electric vehicle (EV) craze in Germany has been relentless this May. The Federal Motor Transport Authority reported a whopping 43,000 new battery-powered rides gracing the country's roads last month, marking a staggering 45% boost from the same period the previous year. With a impressive 18% slice of all new vehicle registrations, nearly one in every five newly-minted cars was electric.
Why the sudden EV enthusiasm, you ask? Well, it's not just a post-pandemic rebound. "Last year, Germany was a bit of a dud - that's part of the high growth rates we're seeing now," notes Constantin Gall, a whiz from the consulting firm EY. But that's not the whole story. Manufacturers have shrewdly narrowed the price gap between gas-guzzling engines and their electric counterparts. They've also rolled out killer financing and leasing deals, not to mention the slew of tax incentives for corporate electric cars. These bad boys account for a mighty proportion of new registrations. In fact, Chinese competitor BYD is now giving Tesla a run for its money. BYD's EVs saw a spectacular 800% surge in May, reaching a whopping 1,860 units.
Yes, you heard that right. Despite BYD's impressive growth, Germany's overall new car market is still in the dumps. Around 239,300 passenger cars tagged along for the ride in May, according to the KBA. That's a meager 1.2% increase compared to May last year, a far cry from the numbers pre-corona pandemic. High new car prices, jittery consumers, and corporate austerity are choking the market, reports Gall from EY.
