European Tech Sector Thrives with Significant Funding Rounds and Investments

Europe's tech sector continues to flourish, as evidenced by a series of substantial funding rounds, acquisitions, and investments. The first half of 2025 has seen European startups raise €23.8 billion across 2,143 equity deals, slightly down from the previous year but still marked by significant bets.

One of the largest equity rounds was by Helsing, a healthtech company, which raised €600 million in its Series D funding round. This underscores the sector's strength, driven by healthcare cost pressures, AI integration in diagnostics, and drug discovery, and a proactive health management trend.

AI remains a core focus, with investments in both applications and infrastructure. London-based Isomorphic Labs raised a significant amount, reflecting confidence in generative AI’s ability to transform oncology drug development. Sweden’s EcoDataCenter raised funds to expand capacity for AI workloads. AI investments exceed €20 billion over the last year, helping Europe emerge as a global hub for AI infrastructure and enterprise deployment.

In deeptech, Omnes Capital closed the first tranche of its second deeptech fund at €112 million. This fund targets early-growth startups in defense, AI, quantum tech, and advanced materials, supported by EU defense mandates, focusing on scaling industrial and security technologies in Germany and Italy.

Poland’s startup scene also contributed significantly, with ElevenLabs—a voice AI and multimedia company—raising $180 million (€156.6 million) in a Series C round backed by investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Disney Accelerator. This reflects regional specialization in AI audio technologies and robotics, with Nomagic providing AI-driven robotics for warehouse automation.

Other notable developments include the growth in European unicorns (17 new ones in 2025 so far, totaling 331 unicorns valued at $1.4 trillion) and milestones like Spotify reaching a $100 billion valuation, highlighting Europe’s ability to scale tech firms globally while maintaining a local innovation base.

The EU continues to back tech growth with initiatives like the Fund of Funds to support European tech champions, reinforcing a broader strategy to strengthen the continent’s digital economy.

Key highlights: - Largest funding round: Helsing healthtech €600m Series D. - Omnes Capital’s €112m deeptech fund focusing on defense and AI. - AI companies raised nearly €20bn in past year with strong infrastructure bets. - ElevenLabs in Poland raised €156.6m Series C for AI audio models. - Spotify surpassed $100bn market cap, a European tech landmark. - EU support continues for scaling tech startups via public and private funds.

Additionally, Fal.ai has raised $125M at a $1.5B valuation, and the UK's AISI has launched a coalition to protect against advanced AI. Fluid Focus has raised £640,000 to grow its screen time productivity app globally, and Ore Energy has connected the world's first grid-connected iron-air battery in Delft. These developments collectively emphasize Europe's accelerating innovation in AI, healthtech, and deeptech, supported by strong investment flows and policy frameworks enhancing the competitiveness of its tech ecosystem.
