In a recent report titled 'Critical Minerals Market Review 2023', the International Energy Agency (IEA) has explored the perspectives of domestic and international battery recyclers in India, focusing on establishing requirements for advanced recycling plants. The report, however, does not provide insights into the economic benefits of battery reuse and recycling in India, nor does it discuss the potential for job creation or the role of the government in promoting these practices.

The report underscores the need for responsible and efficient processes in the development of recycling facilities in India. It also emphasises the importance of battery materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. However, it does not discuss the impact of battery reuse and recycling on the environment in India.

The report identifies the evolving market landscape, technological needs, opportunities, and barriers for investment in battery recycling. It outlines three demand scenarios, each considering varying factors like battery size, chemistry, and car fleet size, for Europe's electrified passenger transport up to 2050. The report projects raw material demand under these scenarios and concludes that innovative technologies and car usage policies can significantly reduce this demand while ensuring resource efficiency.

Interestingly, the report does not provide any projections for the future of battery reuse and recycling in India. It also does not discuss the current status or challenges of battery reuse and recycling in India, nor does it provide policy recommendations related to these matters.

In a separate report, the NITI Aayog focuses on the perspectives of companies regarding battery reuse and recycling. Similar to the IEA report, it does not provide details about the companies involved in battery recycling or discuss the impact of battery reuse and recycling on the environment.

Despite these gaps, both reports underscore the importance of sustainable electrification, particularly in Europe, where strong policies are needed to support this transition. The reports serve as valuable resources for understanding the current landscape of battery recycling and the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
