TR Group, GBV, and Toyota NZ Unveil 50-Tonne Hydrogen Truck
TR Group, GBV, and Toyota New Zealand have joined forces to introduce a groundbreaking hydrogen-powered truck. This 50-tonne vehicle, a result of a NZ$ tens of millions investment, is set to revolutionise the country's transport sector.
The truck, a retrofitted DAF CF 530, has been converted into a zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle by GBV. It's powered by two Toyota 85kW fuel cells, a 124kWh battery system, and 52kg of onboard hydrogen storage. This allows it to operate like a conventional diesel truck, with quick refuelling times and compatibility with standard trailers and loads.
Toyota New Zealand's CEO, Tatsuya Ishikawa, sees this project as aligning with the company's global commitment to carbon neutrality. The initiative is part of a Government-supported program with Hiringa Energy, involving four Hyundai Xcient FCEV trucks and 16 6x4 'tractor units' supplied by GBV. Two Toyota Mirai are already in use, with plans to add 18 more to a commercial fleet leasing scheme. The company previously introduced the Toyota Mirai FCEV in 2022 and the Emirates Team New Zealand 'Chase Zero' hydrogen-powered foiling chase boat in 2021 and 2024.
TR Group, in partnership with GBV and Toyota New Zealand, will offer 20 hydrogen-powered trucks via a fully maintained operating lease. This marks a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for New Zealand's transport industry.
