Facing the Monsoon Challenges Head-On: Northeast Frontier Railway's Proactive Steps

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is stepping up its game to ensure unhindered and secure train services across the North Eastern region, especially during this monsoon season. Aware of the hurdles posed by the area's tricky terrain and severe weather, NFR has ramped up its surveillance and maintenance activities to guarantee passenger safety and maintain infrastructure integrity.

To tackle track safety and stability concerns during this monsoon, NFR has strategically positioned watchmen at all potential risk spots, focusing on crucial areas like the Lumding-Badarpur hills section and various locations in Tripura. Regular checks are being carried out to monitor the condition of tracks and infrastructure. High-ranking officials, including the Additional General Manager and Divisional Railway Managers of NFR, are keeping a close eye on the situation and supervising it personally. Trolley patrols are being conducted, and regular inspections are being conducted to maintain optimal vigilance on the ground. To further boost on-site surveillance, senior officers are now serving in the field to closely monitor risky areas and facilitate swift action when necessary.

In addition to traditional measures, NFR has also implemented modern technological initiatives to combat issues like landslides, drainage problems, and embankment instability. These include the use of drones equipped with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) for early detection of underground faults and waterlogged zones, high-resolution aerial imaging for assessing track conditions from the sky, and electromagnetic surveys covering an 80-kilometer stretch of the Lumding-Badarpur hill section. These advanced tools enable the early identification of potential hazards and facilitate preventive actions. Furthermore, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) has been integrated at critical points to heighten tunnel safety and structural monitoring during heavy rainfall periods.

The Northeast Frontier Railway remains dedicated to providing safe and dependable rail connectivity in the region, even under trying weather conditions.

Fun Fact: During the monsoon season, the NFR deals with an average of 90 landslides a year[1]. But with its comprehensive approach, it has been able to reduce that number significantly.
