Transatlantic health technology industry receives a groundbreaking boost with Meridan Health Ventures unveiling the inaugural transatlantic healthtech investment fund.

A new €44 million healthtech fund, announced by Meridian Health Ventures in May 2025, is set to revolutionize the way UK-based healthtech companies scale their operations across the Atlantic. This groundbreaking fund, the world's first transatlantic HealthTech fund, aims to address the unique challenges of scaling health technology innovations in both the UK and US markets.

James D. Laur, JD, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Cedars-Sinai and Managing Director of Cedars-Sinai Health Ventures, sees the partnership as aligned with their mission to provide the best care possible to patients around the world. Dr Nadine Hachach-Haram, Co-Managing Partner at Meridian Health Ventures, shares this vision, expressing her desire to supercharge the growth of promising innovations for direct benefits to the NHS's patients and workforce.

The fund brings together leading health systems, venture investors, institutional investors, and academic centres of excellence. Notable backers include Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, King's College Hospital, University College London Hospitals, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Hartford HealthCare.

The fund's primary goal is to enable UK healthtech firms to scale successfully across the Atlantic. Twelve NHS clinical entrepreneurs are among the founders of the companies in the Fund's portfolio, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting UK innovation. The fund will also enable start-ups to generate real-world data and evidence, supporting the case for adoption within broader UK and US healthcare environments.

The fund has invested in MedTech spin-outs from Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, King's, and Southampton. Apian, a portfolio company, has grown with partners like Meridian Health Ventures and Trusts like Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Apian's work includes collaborations with Zipline and Wing to deliver care to patients faster.

The majority of the portfolio companies are expanding globally, including numerous companies working with US health system partners such as Cedars-Sinai. For instance, Apian's CEO and Co-Founder stated that the new transatlantic fund creates a win-win for patients, clinicians, and health tech founders like them.

The re-branded Meridian Health Ventures was founded in 2021. Daniel Dickens, Co-Managing Partner at Meridian Health Ventures, launched the fund to ensure the next generation of health tech breakthroughs can be scaled in the UK. The portfolio companies of the healthtech fund have deployed solutions in over 100 NHS Trusts across the UK, and the fund aims to help healthtech superscalers thrive domestically in the UK while fast-tracking their growth in the US.

In summary, Meridian Health Ventures’ fund is €44 million, launched May 2025, the first of its kind to explicitly focus on transatlantic healthtech ventures. It supports UK healthtech startups in scaling domestically and expanding to the US, enhancing their international growth potential. The fund addresses market expansion challenges by providing investment and potentially strategic guidance relevant to both regions.
