Trump and Starmer formalize a technology agreement to strengthen their "unshakable alliance"

Donald Trump's second state visit to Britain was marked by a significant tech partnership agreement with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as protests against his visit.

The state banquet, held in Trump's honour, was a grand affair, with the former US president stating it was one of the highest honours of his life. King Charles III, in his speech, emphasised the obligations leaders have towards future generations, including children and grandchildren.

During the visit, Trump and Starmer signed a tech partnership agreement, boosting ties in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and nuclear energy. Several US tech CEOs attended the signing ceremony, and the deal is the biggest investment package of its kind in British history, totalling £150 billion ($205 billion) from US giants including Microsoft, Google, and Blackstone.

The agreement comes amidst political troubles for Starmer at home. He faced criticism after sacking his UK ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, over a furore involving Mandelson's connections to the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Epstein scandal is a potential issue in the talks between Trump and Starmer.

Starmer positioned himself as a bridge between Trump and European allies, particularly on the war in Ukraine. Prior to their bilateral meeting, he led Trump on a tour of Churchill artifacts at Chequers.

However, the visit was not without controversy. An estimated 5,000 people marched through central London on Wednesday to protest against Trump's visit. Meanwhile, Melania Trump remained in Windsor on Thursday morning, where she met scouts with Princess Catherine and viewed Queen Mary's Doll's House with Queen Camilla.

Despite the controversies, Trump called the deal 'very big' and stated that US relations with Britain have an 'unbreakable bond.' Starmer, in a surprising turn of events, said he and Trump are 'leaders who genuinely like each other.'

There are, however, differences between the US and Britain on the issue of Gaza and the recognition of a Palestinian state. Britain is reportedly preparing to announce recognition, a step the United States has opposed. These differences may pose challenges to the newly forged tech partnership.

In conclusion, Trump's state visit to Britain was marked by a significant tech partnership, protests, and lingering differences on international issues. The visit underscores the complex relationship between the two nations.
