The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, launched in 2021 to bring EV charging to neglected regions, has recently been put on hold. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced the pause, aiming to retool the program to align with the Trump Administration's priorities, as stated in a memo from the FHWA.

As of the pause, 56 NEVI charging stations are operational, and 900 have been awarded but are still in the planning phase. Some of the companies that have been awarded funding in the NEVI program include Tesla, Rivian, ChargePoint, Electrify America, FLO, and Irving Oil. However, the exact impact of the program's halt on these companies remains unclear.

Tesla, for instance, has benefited from the NEVI program, with over $31 million in benefits from the program, spread across 86 conditionally awarded and seven open projects across multiple states. It is uncertain how the pause will affect these projects.

The FHWA hopes to release guidance on the NEVI program by the spring and start the public comment period soon after its release. Until new guidance is released, reimbursement of existing obligations will be allowed under the NEVI program. However, no new obligations may occur during the pause.

According to NPR, $3.3 billion of the $5 billion funding for the NEVI program has gone to the states. This funding was intended to bring EV charging to neglected regions, with the aim of improving accessibility for electric vehicles across the country.

It is worth noting that some Canadian companies, including FLO and Irving Oil, were active and had projects awarded in the NEVI program. However, specific details about which companies receive subsidies under the NEVI program or how they are affected by its pause cannot be determined from the available information.

The NEVI program's pause may impact specific projects, including those involving Tesla. As the FHWA releases new guidance and begins the public comment period, it remains to be seen how the program will proceed and what impact it will have on the EV charging landscape in the United States.
