Trump proposes a rebranding of AI, idea questionable

In a surprising turn of events, during an AI summit on Wednesday, former US President Donald Trump expressed his dislike for the term "artificial intelligence." Trump, known for his distinctive speaking style, made a linguistic query about AI, suggesting that the name might not accurately represent the technology's capabilities.

Trump's remark was met with laughter from the audience, as he stated, "We should change the name. I actually mean that. I don't like the name artificial anything because it's not artificial. It's genius. It's pure genius." However, no concrete alternative term or "proposed name change" has been put forward by Trump or his administration as part of any policy document or public statement.

The AI summit, attended by Trump, was an opportunity for the White House to discuss the policy titled "Winning the Race: America's AI Action Plan." This policy aims to remove bureaucratic red tape for AI development, eliminate political bias in AI, export US AI technology, and ensure the country leads in the AI industry. David Sacks, the White House AI and crypto czar, emphasized the importance of the US being in an AI race and wanting to win.

Critics have expressed concerns about the lack of safeguards for AI and its potential impact on freedom, equality, workers, and the environment. The People's AI Action Plan, signed by 95 labor unions, privacy advocates, and other organizations, warns against Big Tech and Big Oil lobbyists writing the rules for AI.

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has reportedly expressed AI existential dread, voicing concerns about the potential risks and dangers that AI could pose. Despite these concerns, Trump described AI as "genius" and "pure genius" during his speech.

It is unclear if any action has been taken regarding Trump's request to rename "artificial intelligence." The comment was more rhetorical than prescriptive, criticizing the word "artificial" and praising AI's capabilities, but without suggesting what the new term should be. The use of the term "artificial intelligence" continues to be prevalent in the AI industry and public discourse.

Trump, in his distinctive style, questioned the accuracy of the term "artificial intelligence," stating it doesn't accurately represent the technology's brilliance, suggesting a potential need for a new name that better encapsulates AI's genius capabilities. Despite this, no alternative term has been proposed by Trump or his administration, with the term "artificial intelligence" still dominantly used in the AI industry and public discourse.
