TU Dresden's 'Leaftronics' Offers Eco-Friendly Electronics & Water Treatment

Researchers from TU Dresden have developed an innovative, eco-friendly solution called 'Leaftronics'. This nature-inspired technology produces biodegradable substrates for electronics and offers a sustainable approach to water treatment.

The 'Leaftronics' team has created a unique metallization process that coats leaf structures with silver or copper. This process works with both laboratory samples and real sources like municipal wastewater. The coated substrates demonstrate high temperature resistance and chemical stability.

In water treatment, these substrates remove pathogens such as E. coli and fecal coliform bacteria from contaminated water. Initial tests show that the released silver ions are five times lower than the permitted limit, indicating a safe and effective method. The team has presented another application: sustainable water treatment using leaf-inspired structures.

The 'Leaftronics' system offers a promising solution for both electronics and water treatment. By promoting a circular industry and providing a sustainable water treatment method, it contributes to a greener future.
