Update for Dell Streak 2.2 is being distributed to unlocked devices
The Dell Streak, Dell's Android-powered tablet-smartphone hybrid, has received a significant update. Over-the-air updates for unlocked units are currently being rolled out, with updates for locked units coming in December.
The Froyo update brings several key improvements to the device. One of the most notable features is the Wi-Fi mobile hotspot functionality, allowing the Streak to share its internet connection with other devices via Wi-Fi. This feature is particularly useful for users who need to connect multiple devices on the go.
Another significant addition is the support for Adobe Flash 10.1, which enhances the web browsing experience by enabling richer and more interactive content. The update also includes push notifications via the Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) service, improving the device's messaging capabilities.
The Froyo update also addresses performance issues and bug fixes compared to earlier versions of Android, resulting in a smoother and more responsive user experience. The phone dialer interface, for instance, has been improved for better usability.
In addition, the update introduces a new Dell Stage Interface, a set of widgets that bring data and content such as music, photos, and email to the user's fingertips. The Dell Streak now also features the ability to create a portable W-iFi hotspot.
The update also includes enhanced Microsoft Exchange support, making it easier for business users to manage their emails and calendars. The Dell Mobile Sync software will replace the Streak sync software and can be downloaded from the Dell support web site.
However, the Dell PC Suite will no longer be supported with the Froyo update. The Streak will now be sold in the USA with Froyo pre-loaded, starting next week. The update is currently only available for unlocked units, but updates for locked units will be available in December.
The Dell Streak 7 model, which was launched with Android 2.2 Froyo, was also upgradable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. These updates reflect the core enhancements Google brought with Android 2.2 Froyo in mid-2010, aimed at improving connectivity, messaging, and multimedia on smartphones and tablets like the Dell Streak.
