Volkswagen is set to revolutionise in-car experiences with the integration of AI into its Intelligent Driver Assistant (IDA) voice assistant. This groundbreaking collaboration, made possible by technology partner Cerence Inc., will be showcased at CES 2024.

The integration prioritises security and seamless integration with IDA's myriad capabilities, delivering ease of use for drivers. Volkswagen is the first volume manufacturer to make this AI integration a standard feature in vehicles from the compact segment upwards.

Activating the voice assistant is simple - either say "Hello IDA" or press the button on the steering wheel. The new chatbot will offer capabilities beyond the previous voice control, providing relevant responses to nearly every query imaginable. Examples include controlling the infotainment, navigation, and air conditioning, as well as answering general knowledge questions.

Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, is proud of the partnership with Volkswagen, which allows for the offering of new innovations that leverage generative AI and large language models. Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for technical Development, stated that this move offers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool.

The new chatbot will be offered in conjunction with the latest generation of infotainment in the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, and the new Golf. The integration will be available in all Volkswagen models equipped with the IDA voice assistant starting from the second quarter of 2024.

Cerence Chat Pro, the automotive-grade AI integration, offers unmatched flexibility, customization, and ease of deployment for Volkswagen's in-car assistant. No new account, app installation, or AI activation is required for the user.

In the future, AI will provide additional information in response to questions that go beyond this as part of its continuously expanding capabilities. The feature is being considered for the United States. It's worth noting that no information on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for the vehicles is available in accordance with the NEDC; fuel consumption and emission figures are only available in accordance with the WLTP and depend on the selected equipment of the vehicle.

The Golf presented is a near-series vehicle, demonstrating Volkswagen's commitment to innovative technology and user-friendly experiences. This integration marks a significant step forward in the automotive industry, combining the power of AI with the practicality of in-car assistance. Stay tuned for more updates from CES 2024!
