China's Electric Vehicle Market Witnesses Notable Trends

In the recent weeks, China's electric vehicle (EV) market has shown significant developments, with major players like Tesla, Nio Inc, and BYD leading the charge.

Tesla

Tesla's registrations have been on a steady incline, reaching approximately 14,000 units in the week ending August 17, 2025, marking a 4.5% week-over-week growth from around 13,400 the previous week. This growth comes after a 7.6% increase from late July and a 45.2% rise compared to the previous quarter, despite a 21.1% year-over-year decline. Tesla's growth can be attributed to the launch of a six-seat Model Y variant called the Model Y L, with deliveries expected to start in September, priced from approximately $47,200.

Nio Inc

Nio has seen a solid increase in registrations, with the main Nio brand registering 2,520 vehicles last week, a 16.7% increase. The Onvo sub-brand, which started deliveries of the L90 model on August 1, recorded 3,790 registrations last week, its second-highest on record—a 16.98% increase. Another Nio sub-brand, Firefly, also grew by 25.7% to 880 registrations.

BYD

BYD remains the market leader with 65,200 registrations in mid-August, up nearly 19% week-over-week, despite a year-on-year decline compared to 2024.

Other Major EV Makers

Xpeng recorded about 7,900 registrations last week, following a July monthly delivery record exceeding 36,700 units and sustaining nine months exceeding 30,000 monthly deliveries. Leapmotor surged to 10,400 registrations last week and recently exceeded 50,000 deliveries in July for the first time, raising its 2025 sales target to as high as 650,000 units. Xiaomi posted strong registrations, helped by its new YU7 SUV launch. Li Auto showed moderate growth with plans to deliver up to 10,000 units of its new Li i8 electric SUV by late September.
