WhatsApp Rolls Out Safety Enhancements to Counteract Fraudulent Activities

In group chats, when a user is added by someone not in their contacts, a safety overview screen will appear before they join. Notifications from the new group will remain muted until the user chooses whether to stay, preventing immediate spam or phishing attacks.
For one-on-one chats, WhatsApp is testing alerts that warn users before starting conversations with unknown contacts, providing additional context to help verify the sender's identity. This is particularly useful in preventing personalized scam attempts where bad actors initiate contact on other platforms and then switch to WhatsApp for more direct fraud.
Users are also advised to question unusual or urgent demands, verify the legitimacy of any requests, and not to rush to respond to messages. Scams on WhatsApp involve a range of tactics, including fake offers of cash for likes, cryptocurrency scams, and pyramid schemes. In some cases, scammers have redirected victims to other platforms like Telegram, where they were manipulated into performing tasks and depositing funds into encrypted accounts.
WhatsApp's new security features are backed by advanced detection algorithms and machine learning, which proactively identify and ban scam accounts globally. So far, more than 6.8 million scam-related accounts have been shut down by WhatsApp.
Meta is also collaborating with OpenAI to dismantle fraud networks, including one operating from a scam center in Cambodia. It's worth noting that WhatsApp does not provide any information about following the platform on specific social media sites.
